No military service? You May Still Be Eligible for USAA

Clearsurance.com recently published a guide to eligibility for USAA insurance. USAA is for members and former armed forces members and their families.

USAA is one of the top insurance providers in the U.S. Not only are their premiums usually lower than those of the competition, but they consistently earn top customer satisfaction scores.

Military Eligibility for USAA Insurance

The target eligible group for USAA is current and former military members. Current embers from any branch of service may be eligible for coverage. These branches include the following:

  • Air Force
  • Army
  • Coast Guard
  • Marine Corps
  • Navy
  • Space Force

Retired and honorably discharged veterans may also receive insurance coverage from USAA.

Additionally, National Guard and Reserve members can access insurance coverage through USAA.

Although USAA is often the lowest-cost option, individuals should always compare quotes and review their policies to find the best ways to save.

Non-Military Eligibility for USAA Insurance

Spouses of military members can purchase policies from USAA if the military or former military member has a USAA policy. Even un-remarried ex-spouses are eligible for coverage, as are widows and widowers.

Many people don’t realize that children and stepchildren of current and former military members are also eligible. Even adult children can apply for coverage.

So, individuals who may have assumed they couldn’t consider USAA for coverage may be able to purchase a policy.

Ineligibility for USAA Insurance

Despite USAA’s broad eligibility criteria, a military connection is always required to purchase a policy, so many people are ineligible.

Those who have never served in the armed forces and whose parents, step-parents, or spouse never served aren’t eligible for coverage.

According to Clearsurance.com, the following list of individuals related to military members are also ineligible for coverage:

  • Cousins
  • Nieces and nephews
  • Significant others who are non-spouses
  • Siblings
  • Parents

Children of deceased military members may or may not be eligible. If the military-serving parents held a USAA policy before they passed away, their children would be eligible for coverage. If they did not have a USAA policy, their children cannot be insured through USAA, despite their parents’ military status.

USAA Verification Process

Those who apply for USAA insurance coverage must provide their branch of service and start date. If they are retired or honorably discharged, they must also provide their end date.

Eligible family members will need to provide their Social Security Number and their military relative’s USAA number.

USAA Policyholder Benefits

Having the insurance coverage necessary for adequate protection is the greatest benefit of a USAA policy. This benefit is made better by the fact that USAA is often the least expensive option. However, there are benefits beyond the insurance policy.

Those with a USAA insurance policy qualify for discounts on ADT home security products and services.

USAA members who rent a car from the following rental agencies are eligible for a 25% discount:

  • Avis
  • Budget
  • Enterprise
  • Hertz

Individuals who love to travel are happy to hear that they may be eligible for discounts on hotels nationwide if they’re USAA members. USAA also offers travel insurance without a service fee.

Lines of Insurance Offered by USAA

USAA writes policies for several different types of insurance. Car and home insurance are foundational policies that many military members and families choose. But they also offer business insurance, health insurance, and life insurance.

They even offer insurance policies for newer popular types of coverage like cyber insurance for businesses and pet insurance for individuals. They even write special event insurance policies so members can get coverage for parties and weddings.

USAA is a good option for military members, spouses, and children, but it’s not for everyone. Those who are eligible and those who aren’t should always compare insurance quotes before deciding on the best provider for their needs. Those who are not eligible for USAA insurance should consider another of the cheapest options, State Farm.
