Worker safety is one example. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, refuse and recyclable material collectors had a fatality rate of 37.4 per 100,000 workers in 2024, compared with 3.3 for all workers. On the environmental side, the EPA said in September 2025 that it will keep the designation of PFOA and PFOS as hazardous substances under federal Superfund law, and it has identified waste disposal facilities among the “passive receivers” whose liability is still being worked out.
