Zurich eases policy restrictions for UK pubs during World Cup
Zurich has introduced temporary flexibility for UK licensed trade customers during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, allowing pubs, bars, and restaurants to extend their opening hours without breaching certain policy conditions.
The insurer said some SME and Mid-Market trade policies restrict venues from operating past 1 a.m. more than three times a week. During the tournament, Zurich will waive this condition, enabling eligible businesses to capitalize on increased demand tied to World Cup fixtures. The flexibility applies provided customers obtain the necessary licensing permissions, comply with local authority requirements, and continue to meet all other policy terms.
The move is intended to help customers benefit from one of the busiest trading periods of the year while maintaining appropriate risk controls. The insurer also urged brokers to remind clients to review staffing levels, strengthen security measures, carefully manage venue capacity, and ensure fire exits and emergency access routes remain unobstructed, particularly where temporary screens or outdoor viewing areas are used.
“Major events like the World Cup are a fantastic opportunity for licensed trade businesses to drive footfall. It’s important that we adapt and adjust our approach to support them, offering the flexibility they need to take advantage of these moments, while still managing risk effectively to avoid penalties. At Zurich, we’re committed to helping brokers and their clients stay match-fit with clear, practical guidance so they can trade with confidence, remain compliant, and keep customers safe during the busiest fixtures. This is all without risking a red card from a compliance or safety perspective.” – Nikki Lidster, Head of SME at Zurich.
