Vitality introduces AI underwriting for GP report summaries

Vitality has launched an AI-powered underwriting process designed to summarize GP reports for Life and Serious Illness Cover applications.

The system uses large language models to condense medical reports, removing the need for manual review and helping advisers and underwriters move cases forward more efficiently. The tool is intended to support faster decision-making while maintaining clinical oversight and scaling underwriting capacity.

The process was developed in-house over 18 months and tested with ongoing quality reviews. According to Vitality, pilot results showed an 81% reduction in GP report length and a projected 50% reduction in underwriting time for new cases. The rollout will start with lower-risk applications.

“At Vitality, our focus is on using technology in ways that genuinely improve experiences for advisers and their clients. We recognise that underwriting decisions involving GP evidence can be one of the more time-intensive parts of the application journey and can create unforeseen delays. This process shows how AI can be applied practically and responsibly to reduce unnecessary administration, helping progress cases more quickly while supporting faster and more consistent decision-making. By using AI to summarize GP reports, we are enabling our underwriters to spend more time applying expert clinical judgement, while maintaining robust oversight. It is an important first step within our wider Vitality AI programme, building on existing technology already rolled out across the company such as Vitality AI, launched last November. It reflects our long-term commitment to improving access to protection through innovation.” – Justin Taurog, CEO of Vitality Life.
