QBE appoints global data center lead

QBE Insurance has appointed Jamie Thompson as global director of data centers, a newly created role focused on developing an integrated insurance proposition for the sector.

Based in London, Thompson will bring together QBE’s underwriting, risk engineering, claims and distribution capabilities to address data center risks across the full data lifecycle. The proposition will span multiple insurance products and seek to close coverage gaps created by the sector’s increasingly interconnected risks.

Thompson previously served as director of financial lines for QBE’s International Markets. He has spent more than 20 years with the insurer, including a period as director of QBE Canada.

QBE expects global data center capacity to double between 2026 and 2030 as cloud migration and AI adoption drive demand. The insurer estimates the expansion could require as much as $3 trillion in infrastructure investment by 2030.

“The data center sector is rapidly growing and evolving with the advent of AI. Sheer size and scale, power and redundancy requirements, choice of locations around the world mean that the sector increasingly needs adapted solutions backed by deep expertise and global reach.” – Cécile Fresneau, Managing Director of QBE’s Insurance Division.
