Meet Alexander Sibert

On June 11, 2019, Lemonade launched in Germany, marking the company’s first international expansion. The insurer is known for making big media splashes but so far it has kept quiet when it comes to its operations overseas. With that in mind, we’ve reached out to a few Lemonade customers in Germany to learn more.

Alexander Sibert, 34, lives in Berlin where he runs Catopuma, an e-commerce company exporting German and other European goods to China. He is also a software developer helping customers develop e-commerce shops. Alexander’s favorite beer is Warsteiner, he roots for 1. FC Cologne, he loves Chinese and Vietnamese cuisines, and if you’re looking to have fun in Berlin, he recommends the Berghain nightclub.

The interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

Avi: How did you hear about Lemonade?

Alexander: I discovered Lemonade through a news article and I learned that they now offer insurance in Germany.

Avi: What drew you to Lemonade?

Alexander: I came to Lemonade because of the price and the fact that I can control everything through the app. The purchase process was also very easy in comparison to other German insurance companies like Allianz. Lemonade’s product offering and app were very clear and easy to understand and I also looked at their reviews in the app store which were positive.

Avi: Were you previously insured?

Alexander: I was insured with Allianz before switching to Lemonade. Allianz is a very good insurance company but they are known to be a little expensive. I didn’t like the insurance process of Allianz which involved dealing with an insurance consultant at a bank or calling a call center. In addition, there’s a lot of paperwork – they send letters, they require signatures, and they don’t provide a good app to manage the policies.

Avi: What are your general thoughts about insurance and what are your expectations from an insurance company?

Alexander: My thoughts about insurance is that you need to have it for peace of mind in case something bad happens. I expect help via customer service with the ability to do it all online, and obviously seeing that the insurance company delivers on its promise.

Avi: Coya, ONE and Getsafe are all German insurance startups competing with Lemonade and have been live in Germany longer. Have you heard about them?

Alexander: I’ve heard about Coya, ONE and Getsafe via online ads and articles but I’ve never interacted with them.

Avi: How would you describe the average German consumer? Do they shop brands or are they willing to try new companies?

Alexander: In my opinion, most German consumers shop brands. For example, Allianz is well known and every German says that the company handles insurance cases in a good way. Most people I know are Allianz customers, whether they are insuring their homes, belongings or businesses.

Avi: Have you told any of your friends about Lemonade?

Alexander: I told my mother and my girlfriend about Lemonade. My mother is interested and will research them online. My girlfriend also finds them interesting but she has many policies for her law practice, properties she owns, and more with Allianz for many years, which is why I think Lemonade should offer additional insurance products.
