California DMV suspends Cruise’s testing permits

The California DMV is suspending Cruise’s autonomous vehicle deployment and driverless testing permits, effective immediately. This decision does not impact the company’s permit for testing with a safety driver.

The department has stated that the suspension was based upon the performance of the vehicles, adding that the manufacturer misrepresented information related to safety of the autonomous technology of its vehicles.

The DMV has provided Cruise with the steps needed to apply to reinstate its suspended permits.

Earlier this month, a Cruise AV was involved in a hit-and-run incident in which a human driver collided with a pedestrian crossing the street in San Francisco. This then launched the pedestrian directly in front of the AV, which resulted in the pedestrian being trapped under the car.
