Parametric insurance delivers $7.9 million drought relief in Syria
Allianz and Humanity Insured have announced the first payout from a parametric drought insurance policy in Syria, delivering $7.9 million in relief to nearly 120,000 people. Triggered by satellite-monitored rainfall and vegetation data in June, the payout is coordinated by the World Food Programme (WFP) and provides immediate food assistance and essential supplies to rural families devastated by Syria’s worst drought in 70 years.
The initiative, backed by Allianz as a founding partner and funded through Humanity Insured and the Global Shield Financing Facility, demonstrates how pre-arranged finance can deliver predictable aid even in conflict-affected regions. Humanity Insured, a charity dedicated to making insurance protection accessible to vulnerable communities, subsidizes premiums so that payouts are triggered automatically, avoiding delays that often follow natural disasters.
The payout comes as Syria faces a compounding crisis of civil war, economic collapse, and climate-driven agricultural failure. Wheat production is projected to fall short by 2.7 million tons, leaving millions food insecure. WFP’s role ensures that relief not only reaches affected households quickly but does so in a way that preserves dignity and reduces the need for families to make devastating trade-offs like selling livestock or pulling children from school.
