MetLife files to expand pet coverage in California
MetLife has filed for revised pet insurance policies in California.
The filing includes a new policy form that provides insurance coverage for exotic pets such as birds, reptiles, rabbits, and ferrets. These policies cover accidents, illnesses, and treatments, with benefits based on actual charges rather than customary fees. However, they exclude pre-existing conditions, preventive care, and certain pet types like livestock or endangered species.
MetLife plans to distribute these policies through various channels, including workplaces, animal shelters, and veterinary practices.
Currently, exotic pet coverage is available in the following states: AL, CT, GA, IA, IN, LA, MI, MO, NC, NE, OH, OR, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA, WI, and WY.
