Zurich expands occupational disability insurance for civil servants

Zurich Insurance has introduced a new incapacity for work cover to its occupational disability insurance products, targeting civil servants, soldiers, and judges. The additional coverage can be included in both Zurich’s independent and supplementary occupational disability insurance for an extra premium of around 10%. This option addresses gaps in coverage specific to civil servants by providing benefits in cases of general incapacity for work, without requiring Zurich to conduct a separate assessment—relying instead on the employer’s determination.

The move comes as civil servants, especially those in probationary or temporary roles, often face insufficient state-provided benefits in cases of incapacity for work. According to Zurich Life board member Björn Bohnhoff, “Many civil servants overestimate the benefits their employer provides. Young professionals and civil servants on probation often receive little or no pension from the state, making private provisions essential.”

Zurich’s product adjusts to the unique challenges civil servants face, offering financial security even for those not permanently tenured. Permanent civil servants can top up their pensions to maintain their standard of living, while probationary and temporary staff gain an option to close pension gaps in case of disability. The insurer’s commitment to simplicity and fairness ensures payouts based on employer determinations, reinforcing trust and ease of claims processing for policyholders.
