Windward acquires Azimut.ai

Maritime intelligence company Windward has acquired Azimut.ai , adding visual vessel identification technology to its platform. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Azimut’s technology uses cameras at ports and maritime chokepoints to identify vessels in real time, including those that switch off their tracking signals to avoid detection. The acquisition marks Windward’s first move into ground- and ship-based sensors.

Windward plans to combine visual identifications with its existing ownership, sanctions, cargo and vessel behavior data to support government and commercial customers.

The system provides vessel analytics without sharing raw images or video footage with customers and is not intended to identify individuals.
