USAA launches telematics app in majority of states

Following “increased member demand for more personalized auto insurance,” USAA is announcing its telematics app SafePilot is now available in most states.

SafePilot is now live in 34 states, with plans to roll out more broadly throughout the rest of the year. Daily driver enrollment year-to-date is 203% higher than in 2020, and policy growth year-over-year is nearly 75%, with almost half of new policyholders opting into the program, according to the company.

Based on data from traffic analytics company SimilarWeb, the Android version of SafePilot is more popular with younger demographics.

According to the Google Play store, the app has 100,000+ installs in total, which puts it in the 100k-500k range. SimilarWeb provides more detailed download data for Android and based on the findings, there were 65k downloads between January 2021 and August 2021. Considering USAA’s more than 13 million members, we can safely assume there’s demand, but not big demand.

“Demand for behavior- and usage-based insurance continues to grow, and we are thrilled to be able to offer personalized pricing and solutions to more of our members.” – Randy Termeer, USAA SVP, GM auto and small commercial.
