Start Your Divorce Online By Co-op
Co-op Legal Services, a subsidiary of the Co-op Group, announced the launch of a digital divorce service to allow peeps to start their divorce online, supported by phone-based advice provided by experienced solicitors.
Turns out that each year (1) more than 100,000 divorces are granted and (2) three in five of Co-op’s family law enquiries are coming from web-based channels. Hence this new service, that could potentially cut the amount of time it takes to complete a non-contested divorce by a third, from a potential 6-9 months to 4-6 months.
Fine Print: the service will only be available for non-contested divorces in England and Wales where a couple have made the mutual decision to divorce and has been designed to use plain English and avoid legal jargon.
The online tool will guide folks through a set of questions, using clear language tailored to the individual’s circumstances. Also, they will be able to use the booking system to arrange a follow-up call with a family law solicitor to complete the papers on their behalf. Later, Co-op Legal will send the divorce papers to the Court, who will then liaise with the spouse and ask them to confirm they agree to the divorce. When confirmation is received, the business will complete the divorce on the customer’s behalf. All this and then some, for a fixed cost starting at £600 including VAT plus £550 court fees.
Bottom Line: one more online service, in addition to Co-op‘s online wills and Lasting Power of Attorney service, to help people appoint a trusted individual to manage their health, financial and property-related affairs in the event they lose mental capacity.
One more thing. Co-op, the insurer, wants to “disrupt” travel insurance with its “unlimited, cashless medical expenses for all ages.” The new product, announced recently, makes Co-op the “first general insurer to pay medical expenses up front.”
