Sompo names Henry MacHale CUO and strategy head for International Markets
Sompo International has appointed Henry MacHale as Chief Underwriting Officer and Head of Strategy for its International Markets insurance business.
MacHale joins from Aspen, where he was Group Chief Strategy Officer. He will be based in London and report to Alessa Quane, CEO of International Markets. The unit spans 22 countries across four regions: the UK, Asia-Pacific, Continental Europe including Turkey, and Brazil.
In the role, MacHale will work with regional underwriting leaders to drive underwriting performance, set global underwriting policy, and implement pricing and risk control frameworks. He will also work with regional CEOs on International Markets strategy, including organic and inorganic growth opportunities.
“Henry’s appointment is an important step for our International Markets business. He has a strong track record in underwriting specialty products, and brings strategic leadership and deep industry experience, which will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen underwriting performance, enhance governance and risk controls, and sharpen the focus of our strategy across regions. I am confident that Henry’s leadership and direction will help us to deliver even greater connectivity, consistency, discipline and long-term success as we continue to grow our International Markets business.” – CEO Quane.
The appointment follows Sompo’s completion of its Aspen acquisition in February 2026 and the naming of Sarah Stanford as CEO of Sompo UK the same month.
