Sofía Belmar appointed to lead Prudential’s Mexico insurance operation

Sofía Belmar, a 30-plus-year insurance industry veteran, has been named president and chief executive officer of Prudential Seguros México, effective Jan. 15, 2025, leading a new phase of growth and innovation at the company.

Established in 2006, Prudential Seguros México (PoM) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Prudential Financial . It is one of Mexico’s most trusted and recognized insurers and has operations nationwide. Belmar succeeds Sean McLaughlin as the company’s president and CEO.

Belmar joins PoM from MetLife, having most recently served as senior vice president of Business Development for Latin America, leading the expansion of distribution channels and establishing strategic alliances in the region. She was previously CEO of MetLife México, one of the country’s largest life insurance operations.

As the first woman to chair the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions, Belmar led crucial efforts to strengthen collaboration with regulatory authorities and position the industry as a key player during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Belmar trained as an actuary at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and earned an MBA from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México. She resides in Mexico City with her family.
