Samsung insurance affiliates join $1 billion Helix investment
Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance are among six Samsung affiliates investing a combined $1 billion in Helix Digital Infrastructure , an AI infrastructure company established by KKR. Samsung Electronics is contributing $500 million; the announcement did not specify how the remaining $500 million is divided among the other five affiliates.
Launched in June, Helix plans to develop and operate data centers alongside the power and network infrastructure needed to support them. It is led by former Amazon Web Services CEO Adam Selipsky. KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, NVIDIA and U.S. power company Vistra are also founding investors.
Samsung said the investment could create opportunities for its affiliates across semiconductors, data center construction, cooling systems, IT services and backup power. It did not describe a specific role for Samsung Life or Samsung Fire & Marine beyond their participation in the investment.
Bottom line: Samsung Life and Samsung Fire & Marine are the latest insurers to put capital into AI infrastructure. Allianz Global Investors and Société Générale Assurances participated in separate debt financings for data center operator Pure Data Centres, while Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures invested in Antora Energy, whose thermal batteries can serve data centers. The Samsung affiliates’ investment in Helix extends that pattern to a company pursuing data centers, power and network infrastructure together.
