Salient Predictions raises $5.4 million

Salient Predictions, a Boston-based weather intelligence startup, announced the closing of a $5.4 million seed round led by Wireframe Ventures. Other investors include Munich Re Ventures, Powerhouse Ventures, Endeavor8, First Star Ventures, and Blindspot Ventures.

Founded in 2019, Salient Predictions claims to have created the world’s most accurate subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) weather forecasts and analytics. The solution incorporates ocean and land-surface data into machine learning models that produce weather forecasts for periods from 2 to 52 weeks out. The company’s core technology evolved from decades of research at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and MIT, led by co-founder and president, Ray Schmitt.

“We are thrilled to have won the confidence of these important investment partners as we continue to scale Salient’s long-range forecasting and analytics platform. We look forward to making even greater investments in our people and our technology, which have been the key drivers of our success and what allows us to serve clients in a broad range of industries as they better prepare for the risks of climate change.” – Matt Stein, CEO of Salient.

“Salient’s technology was built upon scientific observations that others overlooked. It’s given us an incredible advantage in how we are able to look at long-range weather. This helps us forecast further to help businesses make better decisions than ever before.” – Salient co-founder and president, Ray Schmitt.

“We’ve been truly impressed by Salient’s skill in an area of forecasting that traditionally hasn’t been much better than guessworw. It blows the game wide open and, when you look at the names of our participating investors, you get a sense of how applicable, and exciting, Salient’s technology is.” – Paul Straub of Wireframe Ventures said.
