Nageeb Sumar is appointed president of Liberty Mutual Foundation

Liberty Mutual has appointed Nageeb Sumar as president of the Liberty Mutual Foundation, where he will lead the insurer’s philanthropic strategy and community investment portfolio, succeeding Melissa MacDonnell following her retirement in October 2025.

Sumar will report to Francis Hyatt, Liberty Mutual’s chief community investments and sustainability officer, and will oversee the Foundation’s grantmaking operations, strategy, financial stewardship, and nonprofit partnerships, with a mandate to drive measurable impact across the communities Liberty Mutual serves.

He joins Liberty Mutual from Fidelity Investments, where he served as head of social impact and led the firm’s first large-scale philanthropic initiative—a $250 million, multi-state college success program supporting under-resourced students. Earlier in his career, Sumar held senior roles at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, leading global partnerships and donor engagement across multiple regions, including the U.S., China, India, and the Middle East.

Established in 2003, Liberty Mutual Foundation focuses on advancing security and building resiliency through grantmaking in areas such as housing stability, education access, workforce development, and climate resilience, and has awarded more than $450 million to over 1,300 nonprofit partners since its inception.
