Melissa MacDonnell to retire after 25 years at Liberty Mutual
Liberty Mutual announced the upcoming retirement of Melissa MacDonnell, founder and president of Liberty Mutual Foundation, effective October 2025. Since launching the foundation in 2003, MacDonnell has led the insurer’s philanthropic efforts, contributing nearly $1 billion to over 8,700 nonprofits and pioneering community programs such as Give with Liberty and Serve with Liberty.
Under her leadership, Liberty Mutual became the only P&C insurer recognized five consecutive years in The Civic 50. She also helped launch initiatives tackling homelessness, climate, and inflation-related community needs. Francis Hyatt will step in as Chief Community Investments & Sustainability Officer, while the company searches for a new foundation president.
