Markel appoints head of U.S. ocean cargo

Markel has appointed James Shankland as Head of Ocean Cargo, U.S., tasking him with leading the growth of its domestic cargo portfolio.

Shankland will oversee underwriting strategy, portfolio management, and broker engagement, working across actuarial, claims, operations, and distribution to support execution.

The move signals continued investment in Markel’s global cargo business and an effort to expand its U.S. ocean cargo capabilities, building on its existing ocean marine platform.

Shankland joins from AIG, where he led cargo underwriting teams and managed a large portfolio, with a focus on broker relationships and profitable growth.
