Highmark commits $4 million to community health in Western New York
Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield has committed $4 million through its Blue Fund to support 24 health-focused initiatives across Western New York, marking the program’s eighth consecutive year of investment. With this round of funding, total Blue Fund contributions in the region now exceed $30 million. The grants target key areas including behavioral health, cardiovascular health, maternal health, children’s health, and healthcare workforce development.
Among the 2025 recipients are programs addressing maternal mental health, food insecurity, stroke recovery, homelessness prevention, and culturally inclusive healthcare services. For example, Horizon Health Services will receive support to launch Western New York’s first maternal intensive outpatient program, while the Kaleida Health Foundation is funded to expand post-stroke recovery resources. Other grants will strengthen workforce pipelines through training programs for future healthcare leaders and clinicians of color, as well as enhance nutrition access and education in underserved communities.
Highmark is also hosting its first Impact Summit, bringing together past and present Blue Fund recipients with nonprofit leaders, funders, and public officials to encourage collaboration and share best practices. According to Highmark, the Blue Fund is designed to not only address immediate health challenges but also create long-term improvements in community health outcomes. With over $8 million invested annually in New York nonprofits and more than $1 billion in regional economic impact, the insurer says the fund reflects its ongoing commitment to health equity and local community well-being.
