Guardian expands paid leave benefit rider to 40 states

Guardian Life announced the expansion of its paid leave benefit rider to 40 states, extending access to employers looking to offer consistent paid family leave benefits regardless of state mandates.

First introduced in 2024, the rider can be added to Guardian’s short-term disability coverage and enables employers to provide benefits such as parental bonding leave and family caregiving support, including military-related leave. The structure allows employers to standardize benefits across a multi-state workforce, addressing the growing complexity of state-level paid family and medical leave regulations.

The move comes as employer demand for paid leave solutions continues to rise. Guardian reports that the number of employers offering privately administered paid leave plans increased by 69% between 2020 and 2024, while adoption of broader, multi-purpose leave policies has more than doubled.

Strategically, the expansion positions Guardian to compete in the absence management and benefits space by simplifying administration and offering a uniform alternative to fragmented state programs. It also reinforces the role of disability insurance as a platform for bundling additional employee benefits tied to workforce retention and well-being.

“Providing consistent paid leave benefits to all employees is essential to helping them feel supported and, in turn, foster a thriving workplace. Guardian’s paid leave benefit rider was specifically designed to address benefit parity challenges amid today’s increasingly complex regulatory landscape. We’re proud to offer the industry’s most widely available paid leave solution, alongside direct, personalized caregiver support services, enhancing workforce well-being in new and innovative ways as more employees than ever are juggling full-time work and caregiving.” – Jessica Vanscavish, Head of Disability, Absence, Life, and Supplemental Health at Guardian.
