Dan Bratshpis on Inshur, Lemonade, and Fat Cat
Meet Dan Bratshpis, cofounder of Inshur .
Describe Inshur in as few words as possible.
A mobile-first digital platform for commercial auto insurance, currently focusing on the ridesharing market in NYC.
How did you come up with the idea?
I was working at a commercial transportation brokerage, and I noticed a big surge in rideshare drivers looking for policies and the process was really really broken. The drivers were mostly millennials expecting an online/mobile experience and instead they got stacks of forms to fill out and wait times averaging a week. We were getting frustrated and so were the drivers, so we decided to do something about it.
What is your vision for Inshur?
To become a trusted commercial auto digital platform with transparent pricing and world class customer service.
What is a recent challenge you had to overcome?
Most of our carriers are running legacy systems that have been difficult to integrate with, which is a common trend in the industry overall. We worked with one of our carriers and utilized a backend system we’ve developed to get policy issuance time down drastically.
What is the problem you are solving?
Today’s driver simply has no time to waste on setting up appointments with brokers, filling out stacks of forms and waiting for a policy. We aim to get the right coverage at a fair price to drivers in real time along with the ability to self service 24/7 .
Top of mind insurance company?
Munich Re. It’s a massive organization but they’re continually investing into tech to stay nimble.
Top of mind insurtech?
Lemonade. I think the tech they’ve built out is really impressive.
Favorite NYC hangout?
Fat Cat in Village, cool place where you can grab a beer, play shuffleboard, chess and table tennis.
Word of advice?
Insurance is a centuries old uber-regulated industry and things can and sometimes do move slowly. Startups need to move fast and having a grasp of all the processes behind the industry is crucial to speed .
An item on your to-do list?
We’re building out our fleet platform currently and we need to spend more time with our prospective fleet clients nailing down the initial feature set.
