CSAA is pausing ROOM8

Let’s back up.

The San Francisco-based roommate matching service was introduced in 2018. It utilized social media data to produce matches based on mutual connections, budget, location, lifestyle, and interests. The initiative was led by co-founder and ex-Insight & Innovation Leader of CSAA Insurance Group, David Underwood, after conducting a pilot in 2017.

As an aside, CSAA Insurance Services filed a trademark application for ROOM8 in late 2016.

Then, in 2020, ROOM8 announced undisclosed funding from Storm Ventures, Avanta Ventures, Alpana Ventures, and Plug and Play Ventures, with plans to grow the team and increase platform capabilities.

By then, it also formed an affinity partnership with Liberty Mutual to offer renters insurance.
