Coterie appoints Brett Saternus as chief underwriting officer
Coterie Insurance announced the appointment of Brett Saternus as Chief Underwriting Officer.
Saternus brings more than 15 years of experience across specialty carriers, insurtech MGAs, and commercial insurance. According to the company, his background includes underwriting strategy, portfolio management, and data-driven growth initiatives.
The appointment comes as Coterie continues to expand its small commercial insurance platform focused on independent agents and small businesses.

Coterie’s written premium volume has continued to grow across its carrier partnerships. Based on statutory data, the MGA generated approximately $201.5 million in written premium in 2025, up from $113.5 million in 2024.
Spinnaker, backed by Hippo, accounted for the majority of the business with nearly $160 million in written premium in 2025, up 88% year over year. Coterie also wrote around $30.7 million through Benchmark, a subsidiary of Trean, alongside roughly $10.8 million through Everspan Group.
“Underwriting discipline is foundational to how Coterie creates value for agents, carriers, and small business owners. Brett brings the rare combination of actuarial depth, program insurance experience, and operator judgment that matters in small commercial insurance. He has built teams, managed capacity, worked across carrier and reinsurer relationships, and translated data into clear underwriting decisions. His leadership will help us scale with focus, clarity, and long-term profitability.” – David McFarland, Founder and CEO of Coterie Insurance.
