California orders one-year insurance non-renewal moratorium after Pack Fire
California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has ordered a one-year moratorium on homeowners insurance non-renewals and cancellations for more than 14,800 policyholders in Mono and Inyo counties following the Pack Fire, protecting residents within or adjacent to affected ZIP Codes regardless of loss.
The action follows Governor Newsom’s December 9 emergency declaration and is part of Lara’s broader wildfire insurance strategy, which has shielded more than 4 million homeowners since 2019 and will expand to businesses and nonprofits starting January 1, 2026.
“I am acting to protect Sierra foothill residents who have already been through a lot. Nobody should worry about losing their insurance coverage after going through a wildfire emergency. This protection is needed now as we bring back insurance options to all parts of our state for those who need them the most.” – Commissioner Lara.
