Baloise to sell FRIDAY

As part of its refocusing strategy, Baloise is selling its digital insurance subsidiary FRIDAY to Allianz.

The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price and Baloise anticipates a one-off negative impact on earnings of around CHF 75 million (~$86 million).

FRIDAY was founded in 2017 and it publicly disclosed ~$127 million in funding. It operates in Germany and France, serving over 250k customers. According to the announcement, Allianz Direct is acquiring FRIDAY’s book of business with a total premium volume of around $57 million. The FRIDAY brand and business will be phased out.

“We no longer believe that we are the best owners to take the digital insurer forward. Economic conditions have changed and the German and French markets for digital insurance are highly competitive. Although FRIDAY has built up a high level of market recognition, we believe that there are too few opportunities for us to achieve profitable growth with FRIDAY in the current environment.” – Baloise CEO Michael Müller.
