AAA to shut down Gig Car Share

AAA Northern California announced that its car-sharing service, GIG Car Share , will officially cease operations on December 27, 2024.

Launched in 2017 through AAA’s A3Ventures innovation lab, Gig initially offered 1,000 cars across California and Washington, enabling members to locate, use, and drop off vehicles in different locations within designated “HomeZones.” The service was well-received for its flexibility, inclusive of fuel, insurance, and free parking, and was available for both personal and business use.

The final day for new memberships or renewals was September 30, 2024.

The news follows Avail’s shutdown of its direct-to-consumer car-sharing service, a peer-to-peer startup launched by Allstate in 2018.
