The Hartford names Mo Tooker next CEO

The Hartford  has named company President A. Morris “Mo” Tooker its next CEO, effective March 1, 2027. He will succeed Christopher Swift, who will become executive chair. Tooker will also join the board on October 1, 2026.

Tooker joined The Hartford in 2015 as chief underwriting officer and has held several leadership positions over the past 11 years. As president, he oversees business performance, strategy and enterprise-wide execution. His work has included expanding underwriting capabilities, risk appetite and risk-mitigation services, alongside greater collaboration across business units.

Swift will move to executive chair after nearly 13 years as CEO. The Hartford said that during his tenure as CEO and CFO, the company more than tripled its net income return on equity and increased its share price more than eightfold, while expanding its technology capabilities, product offerings and geographic footprint.

As executive chair, Swift will lead the board, help oversee corporate strategy and advise Tooker. He intends to step down from that role in the second half of 2027.

“I am excited and inspired to lead The Hartford during this time of extraordinary opportunity. As a result of Chris’ tremendous vision and leadership, we are exceptionally well-positioned for the future with financial strength, a disciplined strategy and an unwavering commitment to excellence. With our competitive advantages, talented teams and focus on innovation, we are poised to excel and create lasting value for all our stakeholders.” – Tooker.

Bottom Line: A concentration of CEO handoffs heading into 2027, with many successors already serving as president, COO or CFO and several outgoing leaders retaining board or advisory roles. The Hartford joins Hanover, Protective, Goosehead, Jewelers Mutual and Grange in announcing leadership transitions this year that extend into 2027.
