Grab launches car insurance for private-hire drivers in Singapore

Grab’s insurance arm, GrabInsure, has launched a motor insurance product in Singapore designed specifically for private-hire vehicle drivers, introducing personalized pricing and flexible payment options tied to platform data.

The product uses historical driving and performance data from the Grab platform to price policies based on each driver’s track record, aiming to reward safer driving and consistent service with lower premiums.

A key feature is payment flexibility. Drivers can pay premiums through their Grab Driver Wallet without a credit card and opt for installment plans, turning annual premiums into smaller, ongoing payments. The product also includes 24/7 emergency assistance.

GrabInsure says the launch addresses long-standing gaps in traditional motor insurance for gig drivers, particularly around affordability and access. Eligibility is limited to drivers using their own vehicles.

The launch builds on GrabInsure’s broader push to develop financial protection products for its driver base. This includes its Earnings Protection Policy, which provides coverage for lost income tied to events like family emergencies, late passenger cancellations, and vehicle cleaning downtime.

The move highlights a growing trend of platform-driven insurance, where underwriting and pricing are increasingly tied to behavioral and operational data captured within closed ecosystems.
