Head of Portfolio Underwriting – Small Commercial

Our client is a fast-growing, tech-enabled commercial lines Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance company committed to transforming how small business insurance is underwritten and delivered. As the Head of Portfolio Underwriting, you will play a key strategic role in defining and executing the company’s underwriting strategy across all lines of business. Reporting to the head insurance leader, this role combines technical underwriting expertise with analytical insight and data-driven strategy to ensure profitable growth, operational excellence, and alignment across product, data, and growth functions. You will lead a small, high-performing team and influence underwriting outcomes across the organization.

Responsibilities

• Lead Portfolio Underwriting Strategy: Develop and execute strategies to drive profitable growth through optimized risk selection, capacity management, pricing segmentation, and product-level decision-making.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with data & analytics, engineering, product, and growth teams to align underwriting insights with strategic goals. Serve as a key advisor on market conditions and performance trends.
• Team Leadership & Underwriting Optimization: Manage and mentor a team of underwriting professionals and analysts, implement portfolio monitoring tools, and drive underwriting excellence through audits, feedback loops, and process improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 10 years of commercial lines underwriting experience (Property and Casualty (P&C) Insurance), including at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
• Strong background in small and micro-commercial lines (GL, BOP, professional), with demonstrated ability to blend desk underwriting knowledge with analytical rigor.
• Proficiency in using data to drive underwriting decisions; experience with actuarial analysis and/or predictive modeling is strongly preferred (credentialed actuary not required).
